Do you know how to file an insurance claim? To be honest, even though I am an insurance agent, I didn’t know how to file a claim until I began working for an insurance agency. If you have never had to do it, then it makes sense that you probably don’t know how. During a claim, this is when you need your insurance agent or agency the most. We are here to help you every step of the way, but we also want you to know some of the steps before you give us a call.
I am going to walk you through a couple of claims scenarios for both auto insurance and home insurance, and how the process works.
Here’s the scenario: You were driving your brand new 2017 GMC Yukon home from work one day, and all of a sudden bam! … you get rear ended!
First thing is to make sure that nobody is injured in your vehicle. Then once you are in a safe place on the road, make sure that you ask the other driver for their insurance card & their name and phone number (this information will help your agent file a claim with the other insurance company once you call us). Once you have this information, get a police report number if you do have the police come (we would normally suggest that you do call the local police department because the police reports are a great source for claims adjusters when determining the person at fault in the accident). Once you have all of this information give your agency a call to let them know what happened. Your agency should go through the steps to helping you file a claim with the other company if they are at fault.
If you do take a few days to get a hold of your agent, then we would suggest that you also get an estimate in the mean time from a auto body shop that you like, because you will need this once a claim is reported anyway.
Here are some other great tips for what to do at the scene of a car accident.
Here’s the scenario: It is the summer here in Minnesota, and of course we have a hail storm go through on a hot and muggy July night.
The next day you have a roof contractor knocking on your door stating that he believes there’s roof damage from the hail without even going up on the roof. Before you let anybody up on your roof we would suggest that you give your agency a call, and here at Eagle Point Insurance we will recommend having a roof contractor that we have worked wit in the past to go on your roof before we open a claim. Once the roof contractor goes on your roof, if they come back with stating that they believe that you do have hail damage, then we’ll have an adjuster from your insurance company go out on the roof with this contractor to determine if there’s actual damage or not. This will be the beginning of filing a claim. If the adjuster finds that there is truly no hail damage then they will not pay out on your claim, and they will close it with a $0.00 balance. But, if they do find that there is indeed roof damage then the adjuster will continue to work with you throughout the process of getting your roof fixed and the insurance company will pay it out, less your deductible.
In any instance, the best thing to do is to call your agency to see what the next steps will be. We are always here to be a helpful hand--Especially during the claims process! We want to make sure that you feel protected, and are covered correctly whenever a claim does happen. Please leave a comment below with any questions regarding claims, or give our agency a call!
