Keeping a home inventory is the best way to ensure that you get reimbursed for the real value of all the items you own after an insurable incident. But keeping a home inventory takes time and commitment, and can be a challenging undertaking. After all, organizing the list of items by room, attaching photos and receipts, updating serial numbers and keeping it all current as you add new items to your home is worthwhile, but daunting.
Thankfully, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) recently made it easier for home owners to keep track of their possessions and ensure accurate home insurance claims; they developed and released an iPhone app that allows homeowners to take a picture of their property with their iPhone and then enter a description, bar codes and serial numbers. This program also stores all of this information so that if there is a claim it can be easily accessed.
But this new app isn’t just a loose file of all the items you have in your home. It actually allows for organization by room and facilitates email sharing so you can send a backup email file to us to keep—which creates a much easier and more secure form of document storage than a traditional paper list would. Best of all, the NAIC app is free and can be downloaded by visiting the Apple iTunes store http://itunes.apple.com/app/myhome-scr-app-book/id414273863?mt=8.
An insurer can only make you whole after a loss if you can tell them what items you lost and approximate their age, model and condition. But relying on your memory after a traumatic event is not the best laid plan. Instead, rely on this handy iPhone app if you can, and let it do the post-incident remembering and reporting for you.
Please feel free to email your file to us!
